Kallipalooza 2006 Liberty Hall, Friday, July 14
The idea of an event called Kallipalooza was dreamed up by me and several friends after a long hot day at Lollapalooza many years ago. We continued to refer to the month of July as “Kallipalooza” since July included my
birthday and many other fun parties and events. Months after I became sick with pancreatitis in May of 2005, Andy decided that an event at Liberty Hall called Kallipalooza could be a great fundraiser, since I had been out of work for so long, and the bills keep piling up. I thought he was crazy, but he insisted that it could be done, and well, here it is… It’s been a long and crazy past year… 18 hospitalizations, 2 major surgeries, lots and lots of trips to KU Med, St. Lukes, and LMH. My life has been changed forever in so many ways...I am now diabetic, I’ve lost 100 pounds, cut all my hair off, and learned to have a hell of a lot of fun without drinking. By far the biggest change in perspective, however, has been seeing how many people have helped me in so many ways. I am amazed to look back at the past year and cannot count the number of new friends, old friends, and family who so willingly have given me time, money, rides to the doctor, trips to Sonic, cleaned my house, taken care of my dogs, dragged me to the hospital, talked me through many dark moments, spent nights with me in the
hospital, taken me on aimless car rides when I was too weak to leave the house otherwise, raised money, talked to me on the phone, visited me in the hospitals, made sure I kept my job and insurance, washed my hair, made me laugh, and cried with me when no one else knew what to do. I will be forever grateful to every single person who has been part of my life in the past year. I seriously have hundreds of thank you notes that I fully intend to write… hey, better late than never? I hope to be able to be 100%
involved in making this event an annual one to raise money for others who find themselves in an unexpected health crisis like I’ve experienced. For now, I am healthy and expected to recover fully. There are 100,000 cases of Pancreatitis diagnosed in the U.S. each year. For more information, go to www.pancreasfoundation.org.
Thank you for being here tonight and participating in what I hope is a
celebration of life, love, and the very best people around!
